The other 53 firms we read publish no price at all and quote after a visit, so treat the median as a guide to where published prices sit, not a promise of what your job costs.
How much does a pest control treatment cost at the council?
Where a council still charges, its published fees run from £44 to £236.50 across the 30 charges eight councils publish (median £147.40); rats are cheapest, with a median of £93 over seven councils, and bed bugs dearest. Why is pest control priced per course rather than per visit?
Because most treatments only work over multiple visits: rodent bait needs checking and replenishing, cockroach gel needs monitoring, and bed bug eggs hatch after the first spray. A single-visit price on those pests buys an incomplete treatment. Wasp nests are the exception, one visit normally ends the colony.
Does the council still do pest control?
Some do, many now charge and some have stopped altogether. Gov.uk's advice is to contact your local council to check what it offers and what it charges. Rat treatment is the service most likely to still be subsidised; wasps and bed bugs are commonly charged at rates similar to private firms.
Who pays for pest control in a rented property?
It depends on the cause. Infestations arising from disrepair, holes in the building fabric, defective drains, are normally the landlord's to sort; problems caused by how the property is kept generally fall to the tenant.
